Freddy Adu - by the length of the straight. The kid was being described as the best player in the world at 14, would dominate the world of football for years to come and make USA a powerhouse. The 'hype' was extraordinary surrounding him. And frankly, he never even came close to doing any of it. At least most 'draft busts' have outstanding college careers. Adu didn't even have that. He played a handful of good games in the MLS as a teenager. That's it. you can not have a world class player unless he is at a european club from 13 on at the minimum(bar genius player)- the us system can not make one even the south americans have to come very early now as well due to the difference in sports science and development, but they can stay a bit longer in some cases due to the immense love , playing time and mass competition. a us kid will have to be scouted and bought and move and play in europe. or nadda will happen. the problem is if the grass roots are not good enough no one will care to even look.
