Hunting is a necessity. There's no natural predators to take out the deer population anymore. Wolves and Mountain Lions are gone. The excess either starve or get clobbered on the road.

Wentz has shown off massive bird kills (nuisance birds, ok), gone after wild goats (listed as "near threatened" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature), and who knows what else. He does go after the elk wit biggest set of antlers, etc, which goes beyond the ecological thinning theory.
