This may feline SOP regarding food.
Xander and Andrew take this weirdness to a new level. Two bowls with the same food, but they prefer the food in the left bowl. If the left bowl is empty, they won't acknowledge the food in the right bowl. But if I pour the food from the right bowl into the left bowl, suddenly the food is the best stuff in the world.
And, of course, if they're both feeling hungry, neither cares which bowl is which.
As for water, they won't drink water from a bowl if it's near the food. Weirdly, they prefer a water bowl in the bathroom.
