Yes, they are free not to follow any continuity.  And you're trying to sell that as creatively superior, when it's really just giving up on a cohesive vision. It's a failure to work together is what it is.

Seriously, are you saying they aren't creative enough to set a story in a connected universe? If that's not what you're saying then what's the problem?
