Sorry, nothing is terribly creative about saying "Okay, I don't want to deal with this character do I'm making an AU version of him to do whatever I want with"....it just makes you a lazy writer. Universal started the shared universe, but MCU has advanced it in ways no one else has. Star Trek laid some groundwork though.
Of course, if DC had done things this way before Marvel you wouldn't be complaining. You'd be going on about how Marvel needs to drop having a Multiverse in favor of one Shared Universe.
Hell, DC even agreed with me. Back in 85 when they did Crisis on Infinite Earths it was for the sole purpose of making one Shared Universe. Unfortunately they couldn't stick to their guns and go with it, mainly due to lazy writers.
