They did mention Ben though, Peter says he didn't want May to know because she's "been through so much". That was a reference to Ben. They just didn't directly mention him because it's been done too often in the prior adaptations. They WILL reference him later, but wanted to do something different this time around. Besides, it isn't like Begins didn't do something similar with them making Ra's more of a "father" figure to Bruce than he was in the comics. I get that but still it was barely a reference. Peter didn't feel like someone who recently lost family. But the kicker is, he did in Civil War. The reference to/presence of Ben was more felt there, though still not mentioning him by name. I figured he was clearly reluctant to tell Stark about such details immediately and they would just mention him in Homecoming. But they didn't. In Begins, Bruce had both Alfred and Ra's and his actual father. In Homecoming Peter pretty much only has Stark, (But Homecoming didn't suck, OP. Off base, but less off base than Man of Steel at any rate.)
