I remember when they said that their original take on X3 was more intergalactic. And I also remember when they made a big deal about them going to space in the next one. I'm thinking they are toning back on X-men for the other titles like Deadpool, maybe X-Force and New Mutants, and only making X-men movies for the rights. There's no a way a studio would put a first time director on their flagship series like this unless they are pushing them back for the other movie series they are doing. After Apocalypse, saying you are trying to make a very huge story/character like Dark Phoenix grounded means you are going smaller with the X-men. Dark Phoenix was grounded. It focused on the corruption of Jean by the Hellfire Club. The Shi'ar didn't show up until the final issue. They were a plot device to depower/kill Jean.
