How about a third option for me like "I don't care" or "it all depends"?
As long as it doesn't feel too gratuitous, come across as agenda shoving, get a lot of emphasis, or mess the story/characters up in a big way, it should be a non-event at best. I'm all for a little progressive element and social concept to take place in a media, even a family aimed one, depending on how it was done. This also applies to other elements that involves race, gender, religion, and such. We're kinda in that new 'age' now in a way.
