Friends was enjoyable (at best) during the first few seasons in the mid 90s and up till around 1998-99, and of course it helped out that I was in the age range (teenager) where it seemed like everyone at my school watched it on a weekly basis, and one felt a certain "pressure" to keep up with each episode and have something to discuss/say the very next day, and for some people, missing out on an episode was almost considered to be a certain, social "death penalty" back then.
I may exaggerate (a bit), but during the period of 1997-1999, Friends was HUGE at my school, hell even our old teacher was sometimes more updated than her students on what went on.
I was never a big fan of Friends, as it felt like it relied too much upon more "shallow" stuff/situations and where the focus was heavily built around hairstyles, clothes/fashion, looks and bringing in famous guest appearances/movie stars that often was just playing "themselves" and very badly.
But then again, back then I used to watch it whenever I had the chance or in company with my own friends, or mainly because the TV-show seemed to have a certain draw towards a large female audience, and since the girl I had a huge crush on, was a big fan, I tried my best to keep up, and impress her with my "great" knowledge of what went on, which sadly for me did not end up well. But what the hell, I still got Jennifer Aniston to cheer me up at the end of the day.
However, I grew very quikly tired of the neverending Ross and Rachel, on and off romance part, and then Joey seemed to be dumbed down more and more for every season, while Phoebe was getting to a point where her eccentric and "hilarious" behaviours became a torture to watch, and the worst part was of course the blossoming romance between one of the unfunniest guys on TV during the 90s (and early 00s) Chandler and his beloved Monica, and later on after I lost all interest, I decided to check out a couple of episodes from the later seasons and I knew I had done the right thing (around summer of 2002), which was to ditch Friends and shift all of my focus onto shows like Seinfeld and Frasier, which I thought back then (and maybe even more now) are in a whole other dimension/league when it comes to delivering quality written and very funny comedy that has stood the test of time, which I guess is something that Friends is maybe not the best example of.
Nostalgic? Yes.
Funny? No.
Seinfeld is the clear winner here (or at least for me that is), and there was never really any contest at all.
Could have been a bit "trickier" if it had been against the first 6 seasons of Frasier, but I still think Seinfeld would win that one too, even counting in the two final seasons of the show, which was poor, but not bad.
