Some patients are aware of their surrounding going into the operating room. Most people could imagine what an operating room would look like (even if it's just due to TV, movies, etc). Surely, these people could describe what they would look like on the hospital gurney. I'm sure a lot of vague descriptions are used to fill in the blanks.
I've heard of experiments were a note (with a word, symbol, letter, etc.) was placed on top of a high piece of equipment (in a location that the patient could not see). No-one was able to describe what was on the note, even though they claimed to "float around the room." I don't know if this is a crap story or not, so take it however you wish.
