The reason people think he was a bad actor might be because some of his films were so bad in later years.

I never followed his career and was not aware that he had even continued making films after his prime days.
Studios dropping "hot properties" really wrecked some lives.

Why, they might possibly even think that Frankie and Annette were "bad actors" !
Way I see it, actors do the best that they can with the roles they are given and if they keep being hired for decades, that says a lot.
