The Transformer movies made like 3 Billion and are still regarded as trash. You can't use a money argument. Except Homecoming has done well critically in addition to doing well financially, positive word of the mouth has made it one of the biggest hits of the summer, whereas the divisive Pirates and Transformers underperformed financial expectations. positive word of mouth? This would explain the unprecedented 60% drop in week 2? No, the word of mouth is that this is an uninspired more-of-the-same, ok film (leave the echo chamber and go to some non-MCU forums). Rather, artificial boosters and IP hype prevented this mediocrity from flopping: 1. Spidey is generally one of the most popular SH next to Bats/Supes with his main stakeholder being the super lucrative children market. In China and other countries he is the most popular SM since ever. 2. The film was strongly, strongly promoted with the most popular MCU characters: like RDJ/Iron Man and Cap. 3. IT was the long promised glorious homecoming of Marvels most popular hero into the currently most popular CMB franchise - this was blatantly promoted even in the title . Considering these boosters the results are merely decent, and if the film would have actual artistic merit and inspiration it would have gone through the commercial roof - LOL it required month and finally China to pass WW, a female-led DCEU origin movie!...that's not good...
