Why does the (law) require that secondary schools must offer religious education of some sort? For the same reason that schools are required to offer education in Maths, Science, English and a foreign language. It's supposed to be part of the standard curriculum. Oh, I get it now. Religion must be taught because it's part of the curriculum, or it's supposed to be. Another way to say that would be like this: "We have to do it because we're required to do it." Look up the meaning of the word tautology some time. The correct answer is that it is (or was) intended to indoctrinate children into a Christian belief system. Pupils can learn about the religions of the world in classes for cultures of the world, or whatever it may be called.
