With so little information about you <I'm glancing sideways> I could be mistaken, but I think you're more like your brothers than you realize. I'm not saying that to make you feel bad. I'm saying it to help you comb things out if possible. It might make you feel better to go to YouTube, find a good, clean copy of "You Don't Have to Live Like a Refugee" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and while listening pretend you're conducting an orchestra playing that song.
I don't think religion is the cause of mean, stupid people, nor do I think mean, stupid people are especially drawn to religion. It just happens sometimes that mean, stupid people act in the name of religion without good right. There are more and less talented disciplinarians in the world. My experience is that the religious can be the more talented. I'm sorry your experience was different.
