The set up of the story is almost exactly like Arthur C. Clarke's Childhood's End but from there it diverges wildly. It is a good series and maybe the best that could have been produced at that time. The effects are not very good but effects don't necessarily make or break a series or movie. So, in this case, I liked the actors/characters enough to look past the special effects and production. It was certainly better than the remake. Though I still cannot get past the idea that one of the aliens (in full human body suit) managed to have sexual intercourse with a human girl and get her pregnant. She had a child (which has to rank as one of the silliest births in tv history when that lizard puppet lifted its head) and that child led to the very silly, unsatisfying finale. Best not to place too much logic on it. Also, we had established the visitors were very strong, much stronger than the humans and yet after that initial fact was established we saw humans kicking the crap out of them at will. Despite all that I did enjoy it enough to give it a 7/10.
I would give it a 7/10 overall.
