But the point is, Sony has to share with Marvel Studios. They were making over 700M+ WW alone without Marvel Studios. An Iron Man cameo, a Caps reference, following Civil War, and Spider-Man still can't make 1B? Look, 860M World Wide is great, but you know damn well Sony was expecting 1B+ WW. If you told Sony they could share Spider-Man with MCU, and they'd only make 100M more, they'd have just stuck with their own Spidey-Shared Universe idea. Why do people keep claiming this bullshit?
Sony does not share the box office with Marvel, they paid Marvel to produce the film which is a cost factored into the films production budget, Sony keeps all the studio return on the box office, so by teaming with Marvel Sony made an extra $150m over their last Spidey film and get this...at between $25m to $118m less so this partnership made them money, saved them money and reinvigorated their best franchise.
Also doubt they expected it to do $1b considering it was the 3rd iteration of the same character in $15 years, their last film in the franchise was the lowest grossing of any of the run and that Spidey has never done $1b hell it's never cracked $900m, fans expected it to do $1b but that was based on nothing but fanboying out.
