The faces cannot be seen because both characters are versions of yourself. Kate is your "good" self, who is pedaling away on her bicycle on a new road to Pixley, secure in the knowledge that her three daughters are purifying themselves in the waters of the old water tower. Uncle Joe is your sinful self, trying to tempt Kate with another one of his zany money-making schemes. He can't keep up with her and resorts to feeble punches as she successfully resists him. The absence of both Mr. Drucker and "Dog" indicate that she is on her own in this battle between good and evil, but if she's strong enough to resist even the Devil (Homer Bedloe), then she can easily stand up against goofy old Uncle Joe.
