I like the books, but they are overrated. Maybe the movies went too far the other way, but in Casino Royale Bond doesn't even fire a gun.
And in the very next Fleming book, 1954's Live and Let Die, Bond shoots a screaming man -- directly in his open mouth -- from less than two feet away.
