And yes, supporting characters can make up for a bland protagonist. In fact, for the Spaghetti Westerns I'd say that's there prime purpose. So you believe that The Man With No Name has no interest to audiences? That when they watch A Fistful of Dollars they are actually more interested in Esteban Rojo or John Baxter? I agree supporting characters can make up for a bland character-this is why Steve Rogers is surrounded by support. He needs it.
