Molecule Man's whole powerset and his storyline are pretty much the exact stuff Chris Claremont ripped off for turning Jean into Phoenix.
A lot of classic characters were depowered because the X-Men writers were pissed there were characters around who could threaten the X-Men. For whatever reason Marvel Editorial did as they asked and depowered them (Molecule Man, Dr Strange, etc).
The current writers realizes what a terrible idea this was and have been trying to power them back up and depower the X-men. X-Men fans aren't happy over this.
