Some clues may be in order here.
1. The origin of this riddle was actually a joke I created. It was based on seeing something commonplace in the present day and thinking - "What would someone in the past have thought if they saw this in a future vision?" Bear in mind as a joke, it is mildly exaggerated but still plausible.
2. The occupations of the three boys are irrelevant. I could just as easily have said they were all accountants.
3. The riddle would not have worked if it was set between 1985 and 2010 instead.
