If they were going to do a "Logan", they were.
they just watered down his PTSD. Walking out of a bar with an anxiety attack was about as bad as it got.
It colored most of his actions and attitude throughout the movie. The reason he was building 40+ Iron Suits was a symptom of it.
And they could have made Mandarin exploit Tonys weakness and really make him suffer after Tony gives the interview to the jerk journalist where he says hes not afraid of him. The setup they gave Mandarin could have tied perfectly into Starks fear of not being able to control the threat. But Marvel are cowards and made the whole Mandarin character literally a joke.
They chose to tell an meaningful and necessary story about how we're so quick to believe in "the foreigner" as a bad guy because it's easier than seeing the evils hiding within our own society.
Logan's confession scene that he considered suicide and Xaviers scene of looking into Wolverines past are intense and powerful in showing their weakness,
As was plenty of IM3 and Civil War for Tony.
