The script writers of LAST ACTION HERO should've decided if they wanted to tell the story of a real person going inside a movie or the story of a fictional character going into the real world. They didn't, so the movie is way too long. The biggest problem is that, instead of making fun of action movies in general, it makes fun of action comedies. Most of the meta jokes work (including the ones that are too subtle to catch the 1st time), but the movie makes some of the same mistakes it parodies. Arnold Schwarzenneger's one-liners are acknowledged as cheesy and unfunny and, yet, he still says them. A famous actor (F. Murray Abraham) playing a minor character with a seemingly friendly personality? He must be evil. Surprise, surprise! Also, despite how many times the characters mention the contrasts between the movies and the real world, the last part is too over-the-top. JACK's hand hurts after punching through a car window, but he's not injured after falling on a cab's windshield? Are there no security guards at the JACK SLATER PART IV premiere? How are people able to run around with guns and axes? The film's star jumps on someone who looks exactly like him and no one seems to really notice. Except for the one with the crane, the action sequences are nothing special, and certain scenes were badly shot and edited. The movie starts with DANNY watching JACK SLATER PART III. Why is it in theatres if JACK SLATER PART IV will be released in the upcoming days? Also, that movie ends with JACK's son's death. That contradicts the type of movie it's supposed to be, just as having a cartoon cat. During the climax, RIPPER says he knows what happened in the last scene of his movie. How? Did BENEDICT get him during that scene? Wouldn't that change the future (the sequel)? Did BENEDICT get him before that scene and showed him the movie? What for? And how could RIPPER see it if he was out of the movie? 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian).

Yeah, the screenplay is all over the place and the film does feel a bit disjointed.
However, I feel the film is a bit underrated in other aspects. I think Arnold does a good job of spoofing the action genre, there's some good laughs (like him in the Hamlet parody) and Charles Dance is fun as the villain.

Haven't watched this since 94. There was something too self-praising about it.
The kid angle was a liability.
Some goofy stuff like the "Mr Humphrey Bogart" scene--its as if they felt they needed to tell people who he was. One mistake is they committed the sin of showing and not telling. So when Charles Dance says he has talked to various movie villains from Dracula to King Kong, who do we get? A Death based on the Seventh Seal. Boring.
I remember when it came out, they showed footage of it being made and Schwarzenegger said: we have our own Jurassic Park!
Seems like he was aware of what was coming out at the same time. I think the lack of a good FX angle harmed it. After he had done T2, he couldnt really go back to doing normal action movies like Red Heat. It was expected he do something more FXish..and I dont think he had any other big hits after that? Seems to me T2 was his peak.

Dragging a kid around usually undermines an action film.

Seems to me T2 was his peak. I guess if I had not been a little kid, but a teenager and also having seen all of Arnie's movies up till that point, I would probably be a bit let down, specially coming up after such a beast as T2: Judgment Day (1991). However, I have always been very fond of Last Action Hero, ever since I first saw it many years ago on late night cable and think of it as his most underrated and undeservedly universally "hated" movie, most surprisingly for me is that much of that anger comes from fans of Schwarzenegger or 80s and early 90s action movie goers. But as you mentioned, there was no going back after T2, it had to be larger than life, just like the big guy himself and sadly it meant that people were expecting bigger and bigger things, more groundbreaking special effects and instead they got, well something else which did not get much help by competing with one of the biggest box-office hits of that time, Jurassic Park. However, Arnie did have one more classic big monster hit with him, as he surely hit back, hard with True Lies (1994) the very next year. Sadly, after that I thought he did far too many mediocre and "generic" films which had big budgets and names to it, but this time Arnie could not save them by delivering out over-the-top kills and lots of one-liners, which was nowhere as fun or memorable as during his peak years as an movie star 1987-1994.

It’s pretty fun by both parody and Schwarzenegger standards. Most of it is goofy, but I appreciate it for that. A lot of the jokes tend to land alright and the whole package (via movie) is pretty memorable.
