The makers of TRON made a mistake that is still happening in blockbusters: Relying too much on visual effects. You shouldn't do that, because: 1) You don't know if they will stand the test of time. The effects here have aged so badly that not even a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon could do something. 2) You end up prioritizing them over more important aspects, like story and characters. Here, neither of them get a proper introduction. Once the amazement of the design wears off, the plot gets boring. The performances are weak (Bruce Boxleitner's is very bad). There are some moments (like FLYNN yelling "No!" during his 1st duel and RAM saying goodbye to FLYNN before dying) that are unintentionally funny. 3/10 The music score in TRON PART 2: LEGACY is very good. It has better visual effects than its predecessor (not that it was hard to do that) and it doesn't rely on them that much (a big number of objects aren't CGI). It also has better performances, cinematography and action sequences, but it never amounts to anything more than an exercise in style over substance... and the style isn't even that good. In the 1st installment, the characters' costumes and cycles were gray with lights that were either blue or orange, while other objects had different colors. Here, everything is black with lights that are either blue or orange. We see different shades of those 2 colors (which help us to tell things apart), but they're still only 2 colors. The movie only looks good when both colors are in the same shot. When it's only one, the images aren't very pleasing... and don't get me started on Jeff Bridges' "young face." Depending on the scene, the personality of the warrior QUORRA changes from badass to child full of wonder to empty being who delivers exposition but doesn't talk about what she wants or how she feels. 4/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian).

The second film is worth it just for Olivia Wilde in a tight black outfit.

I don't know, I guess it depends on if you grew up with the first film or not. I actually saw the first film at the theater and was blown away. I played the arcade game and the Intellivision adaptions quite a bit too. I still love the film. The sequel is great too. I suppose if you are a child of the '80s vs. someone younger your mileage would vary. I watched Scarecrow and Mrs. King so it was cool seeing Bruce Boxleitner in a different kind of role after this film.

I didn't mean that it was mutually exclusive (not growing up with a movie and not liking it), but I think this is one of those films where there is a certain nostalgia factor built in. I grew up in the arcades at the mall which was similar (though smaller) than the one in the film. Plus, this was back in the day where you still had to have a lot of imagination playing games and fitting in the "missing" links...

Don't care for the original much at all. The sequel was pretty boring but damn, it looked and sounded cool.

TRON: Legacy kicks all kinds of ass imo. Saw it in IMAX 3D and was blown away by it. 8.5/10 I'd definitely welcome a 3rd TRON installment (and we may get one sooner than later from Disney. Jared Leto might be in it too) screenrant.com/tron-3-reboot-jared-leto-update/

-TRON (1982) - 6/10 (a mild Thumbs Up) -TRON: Legacy (2010) - 7.5-8/10 (within my Top 105 movies. in fact, it's quite rare a movie rated PG (or lower) is this good as damn near all movies of any real worth are either PG-13 or R. in fact, this is likely my #1 movie with a rating lower than PG-13 (especially if your sticking to the last 40-50 years or so). this movie is underrated @ a 6.8/10 average given the crap that scores into the 7.x/10+ range.) I have seen TRON twice and TRON Legacy at least three times (Oct 19th 2015 is my most recent re-watch of both movies). ill probably be seeing them again sometime either this year or probably no later than sometime next year. p.s. and as mentioned above... Olivia Wilde sure ain't hurting things ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

I think this is one of those films where there is a certain nostalgia factor built in. But that's not a good thing. That's an interesting opinion. I would think nostalgia can be a good thing. I get nostalgic about quite a few things that I was big into back in the '80s. I don't think that's a bad thing. Sometimes what I think I remember is better than what it actually was though, I can see that as being a negative. Like I used to think how cool the old GI Joe cartoon series was but then when I actually got the show on DVD I could barely make it though the first season.

Exactly: Nostalgia prevents us from being objective. Many people claim that a certain movie is 100% objectively good and that one can only like it under a certain circumstance. If one can only like it under a certain circumstance, then it can't really be good. The person is only giving excuses because they can't accept that others have a different opinion. I'm sure you didn't mean it like that, but it can come off that way.
