I do believe that scientific advances will make many of the yet impossible things possible for us. However, I dodn't for a moment believe that it will be an easy ride for humanity as we move forward. The new advances will also be accompanied by new problems. Average age of human species will not rise by any significant margin in next 50 years. I read an article in which the proponent was saying that in next 30-40 years people will start living significantly longer than now. I don't believe that there is any possibility of that happening in next 100 years. Unless, in the unlikely event trends in 1st world diet and exercise change, then I don't see average life lengthening even if we conquer some of the major diseases.

Oh, I dunno. Most science fiction from the 19th to past the mid-20th century centered around space travel, space aliens, and everybody having a personal jet pack for flying. Who suspected that humans would have just barely reached the moon a few times by the end of the second decade of the 21st century. Computers where predicted to a certain extent but hardly ever did anyone conceive of a powerful computer in each home? Did any writer conceive of the information age we are in right now - that is someone who wrote before it began? Science fiction just doesn't have a very good track record for predicting the future. Jet pack? Screw jet packs, I want my 600mph magnetic passenger missile! Or at leat my little scooter thing...
