Platoon - Seems the most personal and real.
Born of the Fourth of July - Oliver Stone's second film about 'Nam. Tom Cruise delivers probably the performance of his career.
The Deer Hunter - A bit too self indulgent but well acted and directed.
Full Metal Jacket - Maybe the funniest
Apocalypse Now - As Coppola said at the Cannes Film Festival, "My film is not about Vietnam; it is Vietnam." Whatever that means. Still, a big, grandiose film when directors still took risks. One of the most visually striking films, too.
We Were Soldiers - Remember when Mel Gibson still had leading man status? Here, he channels John Wayne in one spectacularly violent battle against the man in the black pajamas. I remember being horrified one scene in particular - a guy who gets napalmed has the skin peeled off his legs.

As veteran of that war, I can tell you honestly that "We Were Soldiers" is easily the most realistic portrayal of that conflict.
I'll give an honorable mention to "Tunnel Rats" depicting those diminutive troops sent into the maze of tunnels used as a refuge by the Viet Cong and the North Viet Regulars. The so called "rats" were sent in with a flashlight and a .45 pistol to flush them out.

I only really like two of those I've seen (have not seen Born on the 4th of July):
Platoon - I think this is one of the best war films ever made and the best on Vietnam I have seen
We Were Soldiers - this film seemed to come and go and I barely noticed it, it is a brutal depiction of war, I was honestly shocked by it, Mel Gibson is outstanding once again and I think this is an underrated film and one I would like to see again

Kong: Skull Island- aka 'Viet Kong'.
A psychologically complex depiction of the emotional turmoil brought by jungle combat in a morally ambiguous conflict and the end result being the monster that we have in all of us is in fact our greatest enemy.
*pause*
Nah...it's just about a big ape fighting giant lizards.

I like Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket the best. A few others... The Siege of Firebase Gloria - R. Lee Ermey. Enough said.
Jacob's Ladder - The premise has to do with something that happened during the war. It has flashback scenes of the war.
Flight of the Intruder
Dead Presidents - actually a crime film, but the first part depicts their experiences during the Vietnam War.

Full metal Jacket would be my fave.
I love most of Apocalypse Now but I disliked the ending.
Deer Hunter I’ve never been a big fan of. We were soldiers was ok.
Dead Presidents just had too many themes going. I like it but it never makes up its mind as to what type of movie it wants to be and I think it hits a lot of notes by doing that but doesn’t hit any of them extremely well. The war stuff is probably my least fave parts of the film.

Casualties of War is a Vietnam War movie that's not much discussed about. It's been awhile since I seen it, but you wouldn't think of Michael J. Fox playing a lead role in this kind of movie.

You want to talk about killin? What do you all know about killin'? Why do you smoke this stuff? To escape from reality? Me, I don't need this stuff. I am reality.

Full metal jacket is not great. Yeah, its 2nd act takes me right out & the opening act feels a shade overrated. We Were Soldiers while not notoriously a headlining war movie, I really appreciate its angle - pretty much the very first battle, before Vietnam because Vietnam. AN Redux for me btw.

My favorite is Apocalypse Now
Platoon is ok. The final battle is pretty cool.
I thought Full Metal Jacket & Good Morning Vietnam showed the day to day.
Forest Gump had the best combination of it in relation to what my uncle told me about Vietnam.

I'm not a big fan of Vietnam conflict "war" films but Apocalypse Now is great. I like that it's based on Heart of Darkness which I'm surprised was never adapted to film earlier.
One that deals with the French involvement in Vietnam was "Jump Into Hell." Pretty good film about Dien Bien Phu.
A fairly forgotten film about our early involvement over there was "Go tell the Spartans"
Another one for the Gene Hackman fans out there is BAT*21.

Let me set the mood.
Apocalypse Now - Coppola is probably talking about what a mind**k the movie is. Either way, my favorite of the bunch. Theatrical > Redux
Platoon - does feel the most personal. Of course, Stone fought there. Awesome performances from Berenger and Dafoe.
Deer Hunter - once we're past that damn wedding, smooth sailing.
Full Metal Jacket - the loss of interest during the second half is undeniable, though it does have its moments.
Dead Presidents - a little heavy handed from what I remember, but solid.
Coming Home - a movie about the performances, really. I think Born on the 4th of July is a better version of similar material.
Born on the 4th of July - ^
Forrest Gump/Watchmen - these movies aren't ABOUT Vietnam, but Vietnam plays a big part. I think Gump's take is yellow bellied and doesn't have much to say (kinda like the movie itself). I detest Snyder as as a director and playing "Ride of the Valkyries" in the latter during the 'Nam scene got one of my biggest eye rolls.
Casualties of War/Hamburger Hill - two forgotten ones, including by me. They weren't bad or anything, just don't especially stick with you.
We Were Soldiers - haven't seen it, but sounds like I should give it a shot from this thread. Though I *have* seen the scene where the black woman gets the news of her husband(?)'s death, which is probably the most hilariously stereotypical and offensive thing I've seen in a modern movie. Should be a meme.

Apocalypse Now is my favorite Vietnam movie. On top of being bat-shit crazy and showing the horrors of war, it's also one of the most quotable movies of all time.
"Charlie don't surf!"
"I love the smell of napalm in the morning."
"I watched a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor. That's my dream; that's my nightmare. Crawling, slithering along the edge of a straight razor..."
"'How come all you guys sit on your helmets?' 'So we don't get our balls blown off.'"
"You're an errand boy, sent by grocery clerks, to collect a bill."
"Terminate...with extreme prejudice."
"The horror...the horror..."
That's just off the top of my head. There's probably about 1000 more.
