The Russo Brothers have gone on record to say that Groot's last words, "I am Groot", as he calls out to Rocket.... is translated as "Dad?"
They should have had Groot just say "Dad?"...
The shock of him breaking his own language barrier as he calls out to Rocket and the audience understanding what he was saying would have left the theater without a dry eye.
It would have been much more impactful... and amplified Peter's fear and death even more.
Just my opinion.

Holy shit. That would have been powerful. It would have been the best thing about that average film.

Groot confuses me and it's annoying.
I don't think Groot is capable of saying anything but "I am Groot".
It would be like your dog looking at you and saying "Give me a milkbone"
It's the flaw of the character (Alongside him looking like a cartoon) that he has vocal chords that can enunciated vowels and consonant but is not able to manipulate them into other words. However, Rocket could understand the translation.
That it's a language of his people and everyone is groot seems goofy.
I would have never deduced Rocket as a father figure. I thought of them more as a Solo & Chewbacca setup, but maybe since he became a baby, it isn't even the same Groot from the first movie and is instead an entirely different Groot since the first one died.

They were like Solo and Chewy until Groot died and Rocket took care of Groot's offspring. You have to remember that this isn't the same Groot. He didn't just regrow. Rocket planted a piece of him and made the son of Groot. When watching GotG2, you see that Rocket takes on more of the father role (theme of the movie) to baby Groot.

Right, but I got the sense that they want everyone to think it's the same Groot but cuter, when in reality everyone in his race is Groot.

Except, unlike Chewbacca, Groot has vocal chords that allow him any number of combinations but he still can only say I am Groot. If it's a language, then his whole race has the same problem. Until Thor said that, I assumed he was special.

They didn't want everyone to think it was the same Groot. I think at a minimum they did a horrible job explaining what the heck baby groot was and especially since we didn;t know what the heck grown up Groot was. I believe most thought he was some kind of tree version of a resurrection. It was Groot as a baby which means he would act as a baby. Just doing a quick search backs that assumption up: mashable.com/2018/02/27/guardians-of-the-galaxy-groot-dead/#ytWnqM1bUiqAI think most people are like me in that they don't actually care until they find out. However, it's sad because the weight of the scene could be lost. Further, Rocket has now lost both the Groot he knew the longest along with baby Groot.

You hear "I am Groot". It's the same as a dog barking. Or all R2's beeps & whistles. Well, R2's beeps and whistles are a language. Both C3P0 & Luke understand perfectly what he's saying. I'm not sure a dog's bark is in the same vein as Groot since he is talking. In IW, they even imply he's cussing when he says "I am Groot" one time. It is clearly a language in the movies. Part of the problem too is that everyone but Groot speaks the same language due to translators and maybe his language is translated for them but left unknowable to us. Thor speaks the language already. Again, I think the character is messed up overall.

They keep showing him reading the translation in the X-wing. I think Luke is doing like what you would do to a baby that is talking to you.

Well, it'd be the same as if the Wookie in Solo is actually Chewbacca from the prequels and he "dies" in that movie, then we see him later and Solo only replies to him "I won't let it happen again. Later we find out that's actually Chewbacca Jr. in the rest of the Star Wars movies. That would be stupid for Star Wars, but still...
