On the IMDb board, there were a number of interesting threads on this, one of my all-time favorite movies and books (despite the latter's overt racism).
I confess--I started some of those threads myself (blush!), but they were eventually expunged.
I hope that my fellow "Windies" will join this new format and that we can continue with our enlightening discussions.

In my opinion its the greatest movie ever made.
I have not read the book.

One of my all time favourites. Entertaining, great performances and spectacular throughout its epic running time.

I first saw this film in its entirety on the night of its 50th anniversary. I was absolutely awestruck by the whole thing! Especially the ending of part 1. For me, that's the greatest movie scene of all time.

There's a lot to like in Gone with the Wind, but it's also a lush romance told in a soap opery style. For me, I can only tolerate that in small doses.
I don't find it particularly racist, especially if it portrayed blacks as they were in the Civil War. Not every black slave was Denzel Washington or Sidney Poitier.
The crux of the film is the development of a pampered southern belle into a woman of courage and substance. Everything else is superfluous. Scarlet doesn't really need Rhett, and he knows it. She's content with herself and Tara. I've no doubt she went back and restored the plantation and lived in it until she passed away.

I liked it when I was young, not so much now. these days I tend to prefer comedies. Hattie McDaniel 's mammy is the best character.

I think she will get busy on schemes to get him back. She's not the sort to be content until she gets what she wants.

I liked it when I was young, not so much now. these days I tend to prefer comedies. Hattie McDaniel 's mammy is the best character. Agree about McDaniel; it was the best part she ever had. Interestingly enough, she acted with deHavilland quite a bit afterward, including "In This Our Life," co-starring Bette Davis. Olivia was top-billed, but Hattie was lumped in with all the supporting players, and she'd beaten Olivia for the Best Supporting Actress prize in 1939! A lot of people love Olivia in GWTW, but I found her a little too sweet and noble for my tastes. That's what I liked about Vivien Leigh as Scarlet. Yes, she was selfish, spoiled, and a manipulator...but when the chips were down, she showed her true mettle and took control when nobody else did or could.

Spidey, GWTW made its TV debut in 1976. And I bet the reason you couldn't get into the story was because of all those damned commercial interruptions.

I managed to see this at the cinema, it even had that awkward intermission where you're stranded in darkness for several minutes with nothing much to do. Incredible scope, stunningly passionate, painterly photography. No interest in revisiting it but was glad to catch it in the setting I did.

I don't know when you saw it, but nowadays, at intermission, there's an "entr'acte" theme from the movie against a beautiful still photo. Easy on the eyes and ears, but not enough time to go to the bathroom if you're in a theater,

I read the book when I was 10 , saw the movie at a local theater in late 50's. I memorized whole long speeches . I am a huge fan if all the lore around making the film, and consider it to be brillant in all respects. But I have regretfully decided to put it down. I am so horrified by the resurgence of vile racism that I can't justify keeping anything around that celebrates the culture of the slave holding confederacy. I thought we could just accept it as history, " that was then this is now" . But it is clear there are many people who still think the Southern way is okay, who celebrate not just the courage if the fighting men, but the racist values that were the economic underpinning. I love the South, I have roots in the south, but we have to move away from that history, and sadly beautiful charming Scarlett and her story keep the seeds of race hatred alive.

Without reading the thread, I can't believe I ever liked this film! Well, I was 14! I fell asleep during it the other night. Clark Gable, Hattie and Olivia are the only ones I can watch it for. Scarlett is insufferable, whiny, annoying! (Ok so Viv is good at that!) Leslie is his usual weak self, bless his heart. Hard to believe a Scarlett would turn down a Rhett for an Ashley. He even has a girl name! (I know, I know!!!) At 14 I loved my GWTW notebook. I thought I was so cool carrying that in school, loving such a "deep" movie! Now I can't stand drama. No longer big on romance, see previous thread if curious why. I love being single. The only thing that completes me is a hot dead guy in a 30s film! but no tears here! It's not star crossed lovers lost in time, it's just a fan having fun admiring the immortal greats. GWTW? Nah! Great production but I gave it 6/10 all for Clark & above posse. The story is a 2 for me. Let me go get my violin. I'd rather slap myself than ever have a Scarlett as role model. Olivia was the sweet one, forgot her role name and Scarlet might be only 1 T. Scarlett has some good qualities. She is brave and resourceful and doesn't give way to despair when she finds Tara wrecked and her family impoverished. She sets out to make things better. She doesn't let anything defeat her. Melanie is sweet but too perfect, she wouldn't make a very interesting heroine.

Gone With The Wind is one of my favorite movies. It is very well made. I am a classic movie fan. If I had to pick an all time favorite movie, it would be Gone With The Wind. I posted on the IMDB message boards every so often. I read the Little House On The Prairie and Gone With The Wind message boards often. The Gone With The Wind message board was my favorite message board. I am going to miss it a lot. Too bad IMDB is getting rid of their message boards tomorrow. As Scarlett says, tomorrow is another day. I am hoping that IMDB will decide to bring back their message boards in the future.

It is great to hear from you too, snsurone. I also hope that the rest of the Windies will join this message board. It is a good message board. It is not quite as good as the IMDB message boards were since they had a message board for every Tv show, movie, and actor and actress. This message board is otherwise pretty well organized. This will be a good message board to have Gone With The Wind discussions on.

GWTW is my favorite movie. I'm sure fellow 'Windies' will appreciate this story from my childhood:
I can't remember the first time I watched Gone with the Wind (perhaps age 7?) but as soon as I saw it I had to have it playing 24/7. It was one of those films I needed to watch again and again. I was in The younger Girl Scout group, The Brownies, and it was announced that we were going to do a talent show. Long story short I performed Scarlett and Ashley's scene in the parlor where Scarlett professes her love for Ashley and Rhett overhears everything. My fellow Brownies had no idea what I was doing but all their grandparents in attendance doted over my performance.
And, yes, I'm still a huge nerd and a huge fan of Gone with the Wind today. I love the novel as well but I feel like Scarlett's character is too harsh and cold in the book.
