Has anyone ever read the book and compared it to the movie?

Yup. Probably the one movie based on a Roald Dahl book that came the closest to the spirit of Dahl's books (Willy Wonka with Gene Wilder was too lighthearted, Willy Wonka with Johnny Depp wasn't lighthearted enough, and don't even get me started with James and the Giant Peach).
It's really not that different from the book either. There are some events added to the story, and the setting is changed from Britain to America, and Matilda doesn't lose her powers in the end like she does in the book. But it's a pretty faithful adaptation.

I read the book and the only major difference I remember was at the end of the book she loses her powers. The movie foreshadows Matilda's telekinetic powers early on, before she ever goes to school, whereas in the book it's completely absent until the moment with the glass of water. There's a prank Matilda pulls on her parents with a parrot in the book that doesn't occur in the movie. Many of the events happen in a different order. Matilda is six and a half years old in the movie instead of five and a half like she was in the book. Matilda actually goes to her father's workplace and sees the illegal methods he's using in the movie, whereas in the book she just hears him talking about it. Matilda is actually locked in the Chokey by Trunchbull after her father sells Trunchbull a crappy car in the movie. This does not happen in the book. Hortensia is a tough kid in the book who acts all braggy, whereas in the movie she appears to be friends with Matilda and Lavender. Matilda also trespasses on Trunchbull's property twice in the movie, and there are no parallel scenes to this in the book.

I liked the movie better. The book is grim even for Roald Dahl.
