DC take bigger risks. Making a bunch of dreadful movies and then asking us to give a crap about Justice League was a bold move whatever the outcome.

I don't recall anyone saying that it wasn't a risk. They even said that if Iron Man tanked it would have killed Marvel.

Blade already showed that you can make a successful film with obscure characters.

Blade already showed that you can make a successful film with obscure characters. Thing is when Blade came out it wasn't marketed as a superhero movie nor did they make any effort to suggest that it was ever based on a comic book, they promoted it as a straight up horror-action film with Wesley Snipes who was very hot at the time. Hybrids of action and horror were not wholly original a pairing back then, either and were the popular thing to produce especially if it featured vampires. Another thing to point out is that Blade isn't as much of a superhero in the same sense as, say, Spider-Man or Iron Man, so it isn't as easy to lump him next to one or the other. Blade was also totally stand alone and didn't branch off to other films or crossover with anybody else.

Blade is proof you can make a mature comicbook movie MCU plays it too safe Blade isn't like other Marvel characters a movie with him is obviously going to play out fairly differently to an Iron Man or Captain America movie which are not brands that typically lend themselves to being dark and gritty in the same sense. And no, the MCU does not play it too safe. Just because you dislike most of their output for silly reasons like use of humor and brighter colors doesn't make it any less truthful that they took risks and have changed the blockbuster marketplace as we know it today.

They even took risks later by making movies like Ant Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. It is amazing to think that everything they do works. So many times these things do not pay off.

They even took risks later by making movies like Ant Man and Guardians of the Galaxy. It is amazing to think that everything they do works. So many times these things do not pay off. And Doctor Strange. But of those three, really only Guardians was a risk. The success of something as off the wall as Guardians gave them the confidence to give anything a shot because they knew they had the faith of the audience that it would be enjoyable. Once they hit a home run with that, it was a lot easier to go ahead with stuff like Ant-Man and Doctor Strange. What's truly impressive is that all of these films have been so well crafted. Critics can call them cookie cutter productions, but each comic book property has its own unique quirks that can make it easy to ruin completely when translating it to the screen. Marvel Studios has a few 'meh' flicks in its filmography but no outright bombs. After nearly 20 films, that's a hell of an accomplishment.
