Well, here we are. 10 years later.
Has time been kind to "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull"?
Do any of you still hate "nuke the fridge"?
Some people have embraced it while others hate it.
Where do you stand?
Some things Spielberg has said which are telling:
www.cnn.com/2011/10/27/showbiz/movies/spielberg-indiana-jones-4-ew/index.html
"I sympathize with people who didn't like the MacGuffin because I never liked the MacGuffin," says Spielberg. "George [Lucas] and I had big arguments about the MacGuffin." "I am loyal to my best friend," he says. "When he writes a story he believes in -- even if I don't believe in it -- I'm going to shoot the movie the way George envisaged it."
"What people really jumped at was Indy climbing into a refrigerator and getting blown into the sky by an atom-bomb blast. Blame me. Don't blame George. That was my silly idea. People stopped saying 'jump the shark.' They now say, 'nuked the fridge.' I'm proud of that. I'm glad I was able to bring that into popular culture."
As for me, I still think it's the worst of the four films, but I don't think it's a bad film. It has its flaws for sure, and you know what they are, but it does have some strengths. I still feel it's an unnecessary sequel (and I put the blame on Lucas and Ford for it mostly), but at least it's no "Batman & Robin".

Honestly, I prefer that movie over the 1st/2nd movies. in fact, I only mildly like the 3rd and 4th movies of the series.

It's never as bad as I remember. I actually love the fridge scene.

I saw it in the theater during its first run. Mixed opinions.
Likes: Reference to Young Indiana Jones when Indy travels to South America The chase around the Marshall college campus The sequence in the grave of the Conquistador The sequence after the waterfall, first discovering the main temple and the guardians
Dislikes: Mutt (in general); especially swinging with the monkeys Spalko (I don't believe her character was given enough screen time to truly be that menacing, and she had very little depth - she was definitely no Donovan, Belloq or Toht) Too much CGI John Hurt as Oxley (I think John Hurt is a great actor, but he was miscast here)

I really don't get all the hate on this movie. It's the worst in the series, but I didn't outright hate it or anything.
It's no more ridiculous than the other films.
Remember Indy survived jumping out of a plane in a raft in TOD? How is that OK, but surviving in a nuked fridge isn't?
Also, I didn't really mind the aliens. I find extraterrestrial beings to be more realistic than religious artifacts anyways. The CGI was pretty crappy on the aliens though.
It's just a silly action flick. Nothing more. Just don't take it seriously.

It's not as horrid as some people make it out to be, and to me is equal to TOD. My complaints are similar to others (John Hurt & Cate Blanchett's characters), but I'll also add Marion to that list...she just came across as dopey in this movie instead of the bright, resourceful heroine from the original. I also really didn't get the point of Ray Winstone's character, just seemed like filler with no real purpose. I also agree with darkknightofgotham about the aliens; if people can swallow the religious hokum of Raiders and Last Crusade, not sure why they have a hard time swallowing extraterrestrials.

It's a decent enough film, and while the weakest of the four films, is certainly not the disaster it is often made to be.
My main issues were: the use of CGI (what I loved about the first three films was the real locations and effects), too many characters in the last act (love Ray Winstone and John Hurt, but they could have integrated them better in the story), the jungle chase not having the sense of danger like the main set-pieces from the original trilogy and making Mutt Indy's son (it would have worked better for me if he was just a student).
Still, I thought Ford was great and seemed to enjoy returning to his iconic role. While I feel Marion could have been in the film more (and less goofy), it was great to have Karen Allen back and her and Ford still had some of that old chemistry. I liked the entire first half (from Area 51 to the investigation of the Conquistador's tomb) and Indy's fight with the big Russian was fun too.

It's okay. Weakest of the four, but it at least kept the spirit and Ford was still solid.

I admit to loving being able to see an Indiana Jones movie on the big screen, something that never happened for me with the original trilogy. Some of the action scenes are more than worthy of this series. I was a little put off by the aliens at the time, seemed silly, but then, I was raised Catholic so I was more than willing to buy into the other fantastical elements in the other films. I think if I rewatched it now I might be more accepting of it. I liked the nuked fridge, that made me chuckle.

Someone tell me if this is true or not regarding the fridge. I was told that at one point it was discussed that the time machine in Back to the Future was going to be a fridge. Spielberg/Lucas threw the fridge in this film as a homage of a sort.

I've never had an issue with the MacGuffin of the film, to me it was doing the 'ancient gods were visiting aliens thing', a concept that has been done in films before and since the film came out.

Still havent seen it. After the prequels I felt I didnt want positive memories of the original films completely ruined and the trailer showed enough to make me suspicious--not to mention, the ancient aliens idea still sucks. It is just too common place and sci-fi, and I associate Indiana Jones with occult fantasy.

Nuke the fridge will never ever ever be more absurd than falling out of an airplane in a blow up raft down the side of a mountain & cliff side into rushing water. Guess what, I have fun with both.
B+ same I give for each sequel. Much more fun & lighthearted than Crusade, a bit more focused than Temple. Not as rich as Crusade, not as rugged as Temple. Crusade's weak female lead & stupid villain forever bring it down.

I actually enjoyed most of the film.
I would rate it, as my second or third favorite in the series. It's about tied with "The Last Crusade"
1.) Raiders Of The Lost Ark 2.) The Last Crusade 3.) Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull. 4.) The Temple Of Doom.
Yeah, the "nuke the fridge" scene was a bit much, but I have seen far worse ideas in many other movies.
I thought the teaser trailer was incredible... But seeing the whole movie was a minor letdown.
There are many traditions that happen in these films... Like: the Paramount Mountain Logo, morphing into a mountain on location. The Prairie Dog Mound was dumb, and the CGI scene was lazy. There were some other similarly poorly executed moments too. Also, it seemed like the whole movie was pieced together around these moments... Instead of: "wow, that mountain looks like the paramount logo, lets put it in our film." It was like: "We need a mountain for our film, so how can we write a scene around it."... The movie seem off, because of these things...
But, I think there were far more good things about the movie, than there were bad.
In the end, I'm just glad that we have a fourth "Indiana Jones Adventure" in the franchise, because I would rather watch any "Indiana Jones" Movie, than watch much of the trash that is coming out these days...

After the prequels I felt I didn't want positive memories of the original films to completely ruined Prequel(s)... Plural? Original Films? Are you talking about "Star Wars"? While it is true, that in "The Last Crusade", we got to see Indiana Jones as a teenager... The only one of the four movies that completely takes place before an earlier released film, is "The Temple Of Doom"... 2.) The Temple Of Doom 1.) Raiders Of The Lost Ark 3.) The Last Crusade 4.) Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull And even so, it's not like "The Last Crusade" or "The Temple Of Doom" contradicted anything that happened in "Raiders Of The Lost Ark". as each movie was it's own separate story. They were not written as a "Trilogy". Or are you also referring to that TV Show: "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles"? I don't think that is even considered "Cannon", in relation to the the film series.

Are you talking about "Star Wars"? Yes After that mighty suckage I wasn't interested in experiencing the same with Indiana Jones.
