Well the console is over 4 years old now, so it's about the usual lifetime of a console.

Well it was already outdated upon release wasn't it? Didn't seem like much of an improvement over the PS3. It didn't even have a 4K Blu-ray player. Ridiculous. If I ever need a next gen console (possibly for when RDR2 comes out), I'll be going for the Xbox One X.

The only thing it has going for it is the exclusive titles. The machine is just underwhelming compared to Xbox One X. Most games don't even run in true 4k. Hopefully, Sony learns it's lesson next gen. PS5 needs to be backwards compatible with all previous PS generations, and include a 4K player as well. They also need to upgrade the online service as well. PSN has always sucked compared to XBL.

Fake News:
PlayStation Says That The PS5 Is Still Three Years Away By Ramon Hara
The Wall Street Journal reported that John Kodera, Sony’s head of PlayStation revealed that the company will take three more years to develop the next generation PlayStation console. “We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future,” said Kodera.
If we look at Sony’s history concerning a console release, it is notable that the company is slowing down its cycle than before. Usually, a PlayStation console will receive its next-generation update 6-7 years after the release of the current system. Now, given that the PlayStation 4 was released back in 2013, we can expect the PlayStation 5 to grace our homes by 2021, which would mean an eight-year gap.
Given that the PS5 is still a long way ahead, it is expected that Sony will be silent for at least a couple more years. In fact, Sony’s CEO Shawn Layden, already confirmed that no hardware announcements will be made during this year’s E3.

I believe we've reached the point where console improvements are marginal at best. No more huge leaps from one console generation to the next. And now consoles are almost the same as PC's with the same DRM issues, bugginess, updates, having to connect to the internet, etc.

FAKE NEWS! SAD!
