Is it - or could it be - in the cards that we could post images from our own computer files as is possible on Facebook?

Yes, but you need to upload them somewhere else and link to them here. I have no complaints with imgur.com.

Yes, but you need to upload them somewhere else and link to them here. I have no complaints with imgur.com. The OP wants to be able to upload a photo directly from a device, without putting it on a third-party site like imgur.com. I like the idea.

The OP wants to be able to upload a photo directly from a device, without putting it on a third-party site like imgur.com. I like the idea. The problem is that storage on Proboards is limited. It's not a file hosting site. While this can be done, the maximum cap is 200MB for a free forum, which is not much at all considering the amount of images people use. The cap can be increased (up to 10000 MB) but it would require paying a monthly fee (up to $73 a month). I don't think it is fair to expect the Admin to pay out of pocket for a convenience feature. I mean, it's either that or users would need to foot the bill. It's not an outrageous idea... it's just that it would either cost a good deal of money or be short-lived and ultimately worthless. It's best to stick with storing them elsewhere.
