SPOILERS obviously, so leave if you haven't seen it yet. But ... Darth Maul . I definitely didn't see that one coming. I knew they kept him alive in the cartoon but didn't know how much of it was actually going to be canon to the films. He even had the same lightsaber from the Rebel series. It makes me wonder if they're going to set him up for an Obi-Wan film

Yeah that surprised me as well. Dude was cut in half, how did he survive? the show explains it kind off...with the dark side being the pathway to unnatural things, hate kept him alive, the hate for Obi Wan.

I really liked the scene, it was Sam Witwer's voice (who voices him in the shows) including the maniacal, murderous laugh. Fan service overdrive (especially with the light saber), but maybe my favorite moment from the film. And better than doing the obvious and expected by bringing back Fett or Jabba too early. I want an Maul origin movie too, including his training and him helping to kill Darth Plagueis.

Did he really help Palpatine kill Plagueis tho? Was he already his apprentice?? And I couldn't tell, I would have to watch it again, but was that Ray Park again in costume, or was it CGI?? I know with a hologram like that, they can get away with CGI. And as much as I don't have a very high opinion of the prequel trilogy, Darth Maul is definitely one of the better parts of it, and I do like the subtle Duel of the Fates theme incorporated into the overall score during that scene. It's kinda like Maul's theme. Much like Last Jedi when Luke acknowledge the Emperor as "Darth Sidious", at these they're not completely trying to erase the prequel films.

Much like Last Jedi when Luke acknowledge the Emperor as "Darth Sidious", at these they're not completely trying to erase the prequel films. the backstory details are not canonical anymore since the EU-purge, so they could fill it in any way they wish. The actor seemed photographed, it allegedly was Park. Voiced by Sam Widwer. LF/Disney never really tried to erase the prequel lore, TFA already included several references to prequel stuff, like the Balance of Force concept, Pods or Sith, or mirroring Anakin's nightly desert village-massacre by essentially having the same happen with Kylo in the first scene (one of the very few examples of inspired and subtle storytelling-rhyming that did not boil down to amateurish rehash in this hack job of a script). Rogue one has a lot more with sporting prequel-vehicles, prequel actors (in speaking roles) and showing Coruscant and Mustafar and making story references, same with Last Jedi (even sporting a Force-slave boy at a race track again...). Also, they have explicit comics and books dealing with prequel time and characters.

It's in the Darth Plagueis book which was Canon until Disney wiped the slate clean. Still it's worth reading. It's one of my favorite Star Wars books.

I wish they had used him in the movie more. Now I want to see a sequel! Or I hope he shows up in an Obi Wan movie.
Yep, maul is alive and totally canon! Cant argue it away now. Wow

Yeah that surprised me as well. Dude was cut in half, how did he survive? SPOILERS
The actual HOW he survived hasn't been covered yet. The first we see him in the Clone Wars cartoon series he already has a mechanical lower body, and has been driven nearly insane, by losing his lower half, and doing whatever it was he did to stay alive. I imagine some sort of Dark side force power kept him alive.
But the rest of the story of how he comes back is pretty awesome and well worth watching, especially now that it cant possibly be argued that its canon.
Its canon, baby. Maul lives!

Like anyone, I loved Maul in TPM, but I never liked the idea of bringing him back with f**king robot legs. So I didn't like that scene or that that nonsense is officially canon. Dude was chopped in half and sent tumbling down a shaft. The bed was made.
Plus, from what I've seen, all bringing Maul back has done is demystified and turned him into a sissy with brother issues.

We finally agree on something! I would've preferred Robot Legs Maul to have just stayed in the comics and cartoon. But nooo, they had to bring him back into this movie like this, demystifying him from the simple badass in TPM.

Well, demystifying is a matter of opinion. I get what you mean, but if you really look at it this actually mystifies him more! After all, we still don't really know anything about him other than that he's such a bad ass that he's somehow still alive! That raises a lot of questions and possibilities.
And as for him being a sissy with brother issues... if that's your take from watching the tv shows then I don't know what to tell you. I don't know how much more bad ass a character can be. Every episode he appeared in were some of the best.
MAUL LIVES!!!

Well, no, it isn't. Well, yeah, it is.
Ask around. I'll bet just as many people are still mystified when it comes to his back story as are not. Its not like they made a "Maul, A Star Wars Story" movie that tells you everything about him ...yet.
