Box office $276.3 million
I thought Star Wars will make shit to gold...but: a SW-movie that will cost the sudio money - and rightly so!
And Rogue One, the other stand alone movie so far, was actually working without major characters of this franchise (save for this asthma plagued guy who always wear the same), but was a quite decend idea: a realistic plot how the rebells came to the blueprints, and the heroes didn't make it against all odds. They knew they had to pay the ultimative price, and they paid it.
The music is overboarding at times, but else a decend scene.

That proves my theory that while Han Solo is an engaging character and Harrison Ford has charisma to burn, he's essentially a shallow sidekick character. In fact, he could have been removed from the original movie and it wouldn't have affected the plot.

In fact, he could have been removed from the original movie and it wouldn't have affected the plot. Well without Han Luke would never have gotten off Tattooine, and without Han Luke would never have gotten Leia off the Death Star, and without Han R2D2 would never have delivered the plans to the rebels, and without Han Luke would have been killed by Vader just before taking his shot, the Death Star would have fired on the Yavin base a few seconds later, and the entire rebellion would have been dead at that point. But other than those minor piddling details, yeah, he basically affected nothing.

Chewbacca could have flown them to the death star, as for the rest, you could eliminate Han with a few minor rewrites.

Ah, so your point is not that Han affected nothing, but that if Han were removed from the film and then some other character or characters were put in place to do all the things he did, that would not affect the plot? Well, that's certainly true. In fact, it's so true that it's actually true of not only every character in Star Wars, but every character in the entire history of film, television and literature. It is literally an impossibility to create a character who could not have been replaced with another character doing the same things.

Forbes goes right out and says both this and JUSTICE LEAGUE killed the cinematic universe. Overkill?
