That's a tough question. The Master is a better written movie and deals with a better subject matter. There will be blood is more visually appealing and has better performances.

It's the other way around for me. There Will Be Blood is my favorite movie of all time, except for maybe The Godfather. I can watch it over and over again. While The Master is brilliant, I've seen it twice and I don't think I'll be watching it again whereas I rewatch There Will Be Blood every six months or so.
I do think PSH gave the best performance of his career in that movie, and I do think acting-wise it does rival DDL's performance in There Will Be Blood. Honestly, I just wanted more of his character. I didn't care much for Joaquin Phoenix's character, even though he was great as well. I just wanted to see PSH kill it in every single scene of the movie. I thought his character was so fascinating and charismatic.
I'm still sad over PSH's death. I can honestly say that's the only celebrity death that genuinely made me sad. I was such a die-hard fan of his work; it really shocked me to no end.
