After watching 'The Sandpiper' with Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, I began to realize that my opinion of her as an actress had fallen a bit, maybe time and hype have something to do with this.
And after spending a month last year re-watching all of the Audrey Hepburn films that I could get my hands on, my opinion of her has greatly improved.
Where do you place Elizabeth Taylor as an Actress, there is no doubt she was a great beauty.

I would say she is one of the greats. One of the most famous child stars of all time, then making an extremely successful transition into dramatic adult roles. The big role that stuck in my mind was as 'Maggie' in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. That really showed me how much of a screen presence she was, that she was able to really carry that picture even with all those powerhouse performances around her.

She could be awfully good. Place in the Sun, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Virginia Woolf, Taming of the Shrew, . Some not so popular films in which she was good, Last Time I saw Paris Secret Ceremony Reflections in a Golden Eye The Mirror Crack'd
All her childhood films had good Taylor performances although the films themselves were not so distinguished

Will have to go and look at the list of her contemporaries and compare them.

That's an interesting way to think of her. Compared to other actresses of her generation... like who?
Natalie Wood Debbie Reynolds Ava Gardner Joanne Woodward Lee Remick Janet Leigh
Joanne Woodward had more great performances but was never as big a star. Same for Lee Remick. Debbie Reynolds is the only other actress who comes close, and I can't see Debbie as a match for Elizabeth's dramatic roles, though Debbie was good in musicals and had a fine comic sense. Debbie lasted longer too.

Liz Taylor ranks as one of the legends of the silver screen. Have trouble getting through Cleopatra though.

Perhaps only Sophia Loren (born on September 20, 1934) could match her for longevity over the 50/60's too many movies to list here and is almost exactly the same age, Elizabeth Taylor was born on February 27, 1932 Of course, this question is also one of personal preferences, as my opinion of Sophia Loren and Eva Marie Saint remains mostly unchanged.

She was alright. It depends on the role.

She is most definitely a legend. She had the makings of a really good actress until she became a Movie Star. As a child, she was wonderful in Jane Eyre and National Velvet and as a young woman she was excellent in Father of the Bride, Suddenly Last Summer, Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Giant, Raintree County but somewhere along the line, the actress lost out to the movie star. Maybe it was all the husbands and jewelry, but to me, her performances began to change and I stopped taking her seriously as an actress but she'll always be a great star.
