I'm not talking about Hollywood raping our childhoods and remaking classics that stand well on their own.
What films were good, but not great? Maybe a few tweaks here or there and they would have been classics?
I'm going to start this discussion off with "The Last Starfighter" (1984)
This film has a lot of potential for a classic story about a kid from a trailer park, going nowhere, suddenly becomes the defender of our galaxy. It has a lot of potential for world building. I'm so sick of Star Wars and Star Trek remakes, reboots, retellings, etc... I want something original and new.

Then, why in favor of a Last Starfighter remake in the first place?

It isn't just the fact that they often remake movies that have no business being remade, it is that they don't even bother trying to make the remakes good most of the time.

Who was the fucking genius who thought PG-13 remakes of RoboCop and Total Recall were a good idea? Why not remake shitty movies and get it right the second time?

The Keep. One of the great horror novels, the film by Michael Mann is a mess. It deserves a remake.

I actually don't mind the RoboCop remake, largely because I am not much of a fan of the original. It would have been nice if it was rated R though.
A Total Recall "remake" doesn't need to be rated R as I have pointed out before. It is based on a short story that doesn't require an R rating. It is just the fact that the original director's style is an obsession with OTT violence.
I actually really want a good remake of Total Recall or just a re-adaptation of the short story. I like the basic story of the original but I am not a fan of Verhoeven's style as a director. David Cronenberg was originally going to make Total Recall, which would have been awesome.

In Time (2011). Great premise, but the story they made with it kind of sucked. I would love to see a remake with a different story that fits the premise better.

The Naked and the Dead is a great novel. The Raoul Walsh movie is only so-so.

Not necessarily a remake, but I believe a movie that actually centers on the battle of Gallipoli during WW1 needs to be done. The old Mel Gibson film was great, but the actual battle was a very small part of the film.

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. While I enjoyed the original , its dated as hell. Just think of the possibilities they could do with the subject matter here. Esp with today's technology/cgi/special effects. David Fincher was in talks to direct it for Disney awhile back but because of some of their massive box office bombs over the years, Disney didn't want to risk it (Fincher wanted something like a $200 million budget for it) . A shame cause I think it could have been really great.

So many films have roughly the same plot. For example, an underdog team training with an unorthodox coach eventually bond, train, and go to the championship (Bad News Bears, The Miracle, The Replacements, Moneyball, hundreds more). None of these, yet all of these, could be called a “remake” of any of the others.
Instead of remakes, why can’t studios and producers just take a script/story they like from the past, change some details (e.g. gender switch the leads, move the setting to a different country or culture), rewrite dialog, and stick a new title on it? It is done all the time anyway – as in the sports movie – so can’t come under fire for lack of imagination.
Or maybe that’s the problem. Lack of imagination. Too much trouble and thinking involved with doing it that way. Maybe creativity costs too much.
