a true feminist masterpiece from leone. rewatched it today. jeez! the stuff you could get away with it back then. it is the most coolly dirty film of all time. damn, its so fucking dirty its unbelievable. almost every single character is a mysogyistic sexist SOB. i guess TUESDAY WELD wasnt much of a feminist.
the set director deserves some kind of life time achievement award. and morricone's score - jeez!
i would rate it 8/10 despite all the flaws. i read a review on IMDB which said that the characters simply look melancholically into space as if they know something we dont. its true. the one thing i dont get about the movie - why are all the characters so damn epically sad? without morricone's score it would have been tough to take them seriously.
would love to know your thoughts.

the film works better as an epic gangster action film. but i cannot imagine it without the melancholic stuff. lets say its just a great wonderful mess of a movie.
this must be the film where de niro's acting began to suck. he is good in some of the scenes. but he is completely at sea looking all melancholic in some of the scenes. i dont understand why they are all so damn sad. i mean, they had the time of their lives having their way with women and robbing people, but the melancholy creeps in from somewhere. its ok, i'll buy it because of morricone's score. it is a great achievement. the sets, the general feel, the music, the actors, the atmosphere. the production design on another level. the likes of BREAKING BAD and TRUE DETECTIVE will never get here. but leone must have been desperate. why did he include a cover of the beatles song "yesterday" in the background score to increase the melancholy level? that too, when he had morricone's score. it is an epic with many many mistakes. yet, i cannot stop looking at it.
Cock insurance. Lol. what about Tuesday weld? Jeez! She didn't mind being treated like a sex object in the 80s?
Man, that shipyard. Leone knew how to get the best locations.
These were times when men did not care what women thought. You could have the phoniest story but if you have the best composer, set director and awesome actors, you could make a great film. It helps when you have de Niro and pesci in in your movie. How many filmakers have that luck?
