Related to but distinct from @thegodfather’s thread about remakes.
Just as remakes are often considered sub-par but can be very good at times (Huston’s The Maltese Falcon comes to mind—though is that a remake or another adaptation of the same book? The eternal “remake” question), so sequels often get a bad rap but can be very good at times.
The one that came to mind for me is Congo (1995), a favorite of mine. The great Ernie Hudson deserves a film series with himself in the starring role.
What say you?

That's the one where they laser beam apes, right?
I guess I'd be up for it.

Yeah, that’s the one, bartlesby , though one of the things that makes it great, I think, is that it’s simultaneously a jungle-adventure picture and a parody of jungle-adventure pictures (laser-beaming apes, as you wrote!). I love it, and Hudson’s great in it.

I wouldn't call him one of the greats or anything but he had a natural charisma about him.

Well, when I wrote “the great,” I didn’t mean that his acting is particularly brilliant or anything, yet I do think he’s great in what he does with what he’s given—probably because of that natural charisma. Like James Mason, he doesn’t phone in a performance just because the material stinks, and I always appreciate that quality in an actor.

I should give Congo (1995) another watch. I read the Crichton novel during the summer it was released to theaters, but I found the film disappointing.
I really enjoyed the animated western, Rango (2011) starring Johnny Depp. It was a box office hit, but they never made a sequel due to Gore Verbinski feeling like they told all there is tell about those characters. Still, I wouldn't have minded a sequel about Rango and the rest of the creatures living in a post-western world.

I was just saying he's not a legendary actor or anything but he's always solid and likable and I get the impression, like you said, that he doesn't ever phone it in and just seems like he's happy to be acting. A class act all the way.

I guess everyone is getting pretty advanced in age by now, but another sequel to Romancing the Stone would be great. Jewel of the Nile was good but didn't have the charm of the original.
I agree about the Rocketeer. Seems like a good movie to reboot and start a franchise with.

I want another TRON film DAMN IT!!! While I wasn't the biggest fan of Tron 2, mainly due to the director, I think if given to someone else... Tron3 could be really cool.

vegalyra, yeah a sequel to those movies would be cool but Kathleen Turner really let herself go. Unless she undergoes a strict regimen or they make it about their kids or something; apparently the canceled sequel Crimson Eagle would have been like a family themed story.

Wouldn't mind another Nightmare on Elm Street with Robert Englund that ignores the remake, just as they're doing another Halloween with Nick Castle and JLC.
Or another Friday the 13th, while we're at it. It'd be the 13th one, so make it special. Ditch the remake continuity, bring back some original characters like Tommy Jarvis. Go big or go home.

Drive I guess, although I can't imagine what they could do in a sequel though.

Flash Gordon The Phantom The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension The Golden Compass

This, and also another Hellraiser movie with Doug Bradley. Yeah the franchise has grown a bit sour by now, but please, could we at least have him one last time and get it right?

Alas, won't ever happen. Production costs vs. probable box office. I would certainly not want one on the cheap either along the lines of the Narnia sequels which were hilariously sub-par. I should just read the books.
