That was a ballsy move. Pujols was the new Stan Musial. He WAS St. Louis baseball. You can alienate a whole generation of fans by letting the face of the franchise go. The Mariners have never put up the attendance numbers they did in the Junior/A Rod days. But Cardinals management knew that a contract like that, paying $30 million per to a player over 40, hamstrings a team. It will be intertesting to see what way the Nationals go in the offseason. Will they pay a gargantuan contract to Bryce or risk pissing the fans off (and losing out on playoff berths) and let him walk? The Nationals are $185m right now but that includes Bryce's $21m plus in adjusted salary plus Daniel Murphy's $17m and he's a FA at the end of this year too. They could realistically afford Bryce but they'd be hard pressed to do much else after that I'd imagine. Right now, Harper isn't playing at a $400,000,000 level. Big power but a .227 BA? And they have Victor Robles waiting for a job. Strasburg can opt out after this year. If I'm the Nationals, I'm wishing Bryce well at his new job. The one difference is, Harper is 25 and Pujols was 31 when he walked.

Maybe for a year or two, but then you’re stuck with aging injured players like Ryan Howard, Albert Pujols, and Miguel Cabrera. Trout would be the only player I’d give that kind of money too, but like you said, maybe whatever team sign Harper will get some return on investment due to his younger age.

www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/23708727/10-hyped-players-running-become-starsGood article from David Schoenfield. It's tough to be a star in baseball. That's the thing a lot of fans (and scouts and writers) forget. The step through the minors, from rookie ball to AAA is gradual. The step from AAA to the majors is epic. Going from AA to AAA and going from AAA to the AL is not the same thing. Byron Buxton had all the signs of being a superstar but his defense will never make up for his bat. If you could tell the difference between Mookie Betts and Brandon Wood, you could make a ton of money.

So there are rumors swirling that the Mets don't want to release Jose Reyes and his vaunted slash line of .141/.208/.197 (ugh!) and summer sloshball quality defense because of his "deep roots" within the organization, and they want to give him a "proper sendoff." FUCK. YOU! That is such a line of horseshit, only the Mets are blind enough to think that anyone believes that bullshit. And you know what, it's so fucking inane and the rumors are so easy to dismiss due to their stupidity.......that I actually believe the Mets are, in fact, taking this position publicly and they do believe that their fans will swallow it. If there's a way to be blinded by all forms of reality and to completely alienate your fanbase at every turn, the Mets will find the way. Anyway, let's assume that this is why they aren't releasing Reyes just yet. It's obviously a line they are feeding to the fans. None of us should believe it. With the news of David Wright resuming baseball activities hitting the wires a few days ago, the idea of Wright and Reyes manning the left side of the infield together again has at least a glimmer of hope. And you know what, when that happens, I bet they can sell an extra 5,000 tickets. That's the Mets in a nutshell; selling out the fucking season by completely wasting a roster spot just so that they can sell an extra 5,000 tickets to a meaningless game in July. Well done, Wilpons, well done. Ugh, I hate baseball. “Deep Roots”? This is the same dude who elected to sit instead of helping his team to preserve his lead in the batting average race, then bolted for another team after. Leave it to the fucking Mets to field an Old Timers squad — they can put David Wright out there with Reyes and make some calls to RA Dickey and Carlos Beltran.

Not really, which is why some players were bitching about the lack of action in the offseason, and we’re probably gonna hear a lot more complaining this offseason. Jake Arrieta was looking for 7 years and $200 million +, and ended up with three years at $75 mil from Philly. The Diamondbacks are fucked with that absurd deal they gave Greinke: They’ll pay him $32 million a year until he’s 38, and he’s already failed to meet expectations. But the worst of the worst has to be Albert Pujols. The Cardinals were smart, and Pujols’ wife whined in the press that their offer was “an insult.” The Angels we’re suckers, crippled their franchise, and they STILL owe him $100 million over the next three seasons! Even worse, the fucker lied about his age: He will be 42 by the time the Angels get rid of him, but in reality he will be 45 years old. Imagine the talent they could have put around Mike Trout if they didn’t sign Pujols?

And the Orioles still get to cough up $92,000,000 to him until 2022. We talk about the Pujols and Cabrera contracts, but but this could be the biggest disaster of them all. The Orioles are going to have to tear this team down and start over but this albatross will hinder the rebuild.

And yet they keep handing out the goods like candy, often just based on one good season. The sooner the owners smash the player's union into a thousand pieces and enforce non-guaranteed contracts the better.

Yeah, I'd enjoy 1 - 2 years without baseball, because that's what it would take to break the union. And no one is holding a gun to the owners heads forcing then to sign these contracts. They don't want to have the fans bad mouthing them during the winter on the net and sports radio, so they throw money and years at players. Just so they can have a nice press conference in January and revel in the warm Facebook comments.

I'm sick of these guys getting guaranteed money regardless of performance, and how they always seem to have their best year in their walk year. Funny, that. F them. All of that said, it doesn't seem to concern the owners too much, which makes you wonder exactly how much they're raking in off us poor working stiffs who bankroll all of this.

D-Backs/Rockies is a big series for the NL West. Goldy has really heated up, 5 dingers in his last 9 games, and his average is now up to 243!

Here I was thinking the Blue Jays would be swept by the Orioles. I'm going to the game tomorrow, hope we sweep... I hope so too. My last game I went to was in May 2017. Encarnacion's return to Toronto. I remember getting a beer and the vendor asking me if I was of age. I was 37.

This is why I stopped buying tickets to MLB and NBA games a few years ago.
I am NOT gonna pay $200 for a decent — not great — seat at Yankee stadium, $30 for parking, $16 for beer, $12 for a hot dog, so some twat can make $250 million for hitting a ball. A guy like Giancarlo Stanton makes around $60,000 per at-bat, FFS.
Going to Yankee stadium is a $300 night, just for me. If you’ve got a family of four and you take your wife and two kids to the game, you’re talking about $500 on the very low end and easily $1,000+ if you get decent seats and you get drinks, hot dogs and cotton candy for the kids, which they will want, of course.
NBA is worse in a lot of ways. A mega scrub like Ryan Anderson, who averaged 9 ppg and 5 boards, makes $20 million a year. JR Smith makes $15m a year to average 8 points, a rebound and an assist.
The “resting” trend makes it even worse. This past year ESPN was running stories on which games “tired teams” could rest their starters in DECEMBER. Now imagine you’re that father of two and you spend $600 to get tickets when Cleveland comes to town, your kids are so excited they’re talking about it for months...and the day before the game you hear Lue is gonna “rest” Lebron for that game. Now you’re spending $600 on tickets and another $200+ on parking, good, drinks and beer, to see Kevin Love, JR Smith and Tristan Thompson. Fuck that..
