I'd like to become a bit invested in the World Cup this year.
Is Ireland partaking since my ancestors are Irish?
Who's the biggest longshot/underdog?
Being the U.S. isn't participating - what should I watch for - keep my eyes on - root for, etc?

You should watch for Andres Iniesta. The best player of his Generation playing his last Big Tournament.

Usually they're a load of old pony.

Looking at the pool - I've made 'Iceland' my official team I think a lot of neutrals will be rooting for Iceland, after their fantastic performance in their first participation in a major tournament, two years ago. Costa Rica was a pleasant surprise four years ago. Hopefully they can repeat their good showing from Brazil. I have a soft spot for Japan. I love the country and I usually like the way they play. Colombia is another country that I hope will do well.

You should watch for Andres Iniesta. The best player of his Generation playing his last Big Tournament. What makes him the best of his Generation and why is this his last tourney? Purely a football artist, and a very humble one not those arrogance types. He presents football as a Game of entertainment technically he is the best in the last 10 years. Him & Xavi are purely football artist. He will be retiring from International football as well European football. he is heading to Japan.

*There's not really one big favorite this year. There's France, Brazil, Spain, Belgium, England, Portugal, Germany & Argentina and anyone of those has a big shot to win the world cup. Therefore, this WC could be a lot more exciting and unpredictable than the last two. *There are also many underdogs this year, AKA countries that aren't traditional favorites but that do have a very good team at the moment. These include Egypt, Morocco, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, Poland & Senegal. I wouldn't be surprised if one of those makes it into the semi-finals, or maybe even the final (that would be sensational). *I expect that if Portugal and Argentina both go through the group stage a lot of attention will go to the Ronaldo vs. Messi rivalry. *Unfortunately, there are quite a few important football countries that aren't even present at the world cup this year. Countries that don't compete include Italy, the Netherlands, the US, Chile, Ireland & Wales. *Individual players you should look out for are of course Messi and Ronaldo and also some of the other stars of the big countries (Neymar, Dybala, Griezmann, De Bruyne etc.). But if you're going for an underdog the players to look for are Salah (Egypt), Lewandowski (Poland), Eriksen (Denmark) & Mané (Senegal).
Even though my country isn't competing (the Netherlands) I'm still very much looking forward to the world cup, especially because it's so unpredictable at the moment.

This world Cup has no Italy. A world cup without Italy is like a Pizza without cheese. It sucks.
