The Titanic movies I saw in the early 60s got me interested in the history behind them.

Most recently, "The Hostiles" which reminded me of the Wounded Knee massacre...
Many others...for instance, when I watched "The Longest Day" I searched out the splendid book of the same title which the movie was based on by Cornelius Ryan. The book has so much more than was included in the fine film.

JFK.. I've read some pro and anti conspiracy books since. It's a fascinating era although extremely tragic.

All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) got me very interested in WWI. As a companion piece to that I would recommend a documentary titled The Guns of August (1961). I had already read the book before I saw the film but the book is no spoiler for the film or vice versa and I can recommend both.

Bridge on the River Kwai made me curious about the real bridge and Spartacus made me interesting in Roman history. Escape From Alcatraz made me interested in Alcatraz.

The book has so much more than was included in the fine film. I have still not seen The Longest Day but I did read the fine Cornelius Ryan book, which led me to read another of Ryan's books, A Bridge Too Far, which is an even more incredible book. And, no, I have not yet seen the film A Bridge Too Far yet, either.

The Bounty (1984) - fine book by Richard Hough Titanic (1997) - read a few, the one by Walter Lord the most accessible Black Hawk Down (2001) - Bowden's book is just as brilliant as the film Glory (1989) - read a few about the events in this fine film, which were not very good, but they led me to read more about the Civil War overall, books by Bruce Catton and the novel The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara Apollo 13 (1995) - I read the book by Lovell and about a dozen others about the space program, fascinating reading

Hatfields and Mccoys miniseries. Each time i rewatch any of it i find myself on various wiki sites and whatnot looking up as much as i can.
Same goes for most westerns based in reality.
