The Ghostbusters II isn't as good as the original, but I think it was unfairly panned.
I can't think of a sequel that was panned that was better than the original, but I can think of a few that weren't as bad as the critics say they were, and pretty solid sequels.

I prefer The Lost World to Jurassic Park.
I still think the characters and dinosaur scenes are far superior despite some jaw-dropping stupidity and editing problems.

Empire Strikes Back was met with mixed reviews and made 170 million dollars less than Star Wars on its release.
Minds have changed a lot since then but i found that tidbit interesting.

TRON : Legacy (didn't get good reviews but I loved the fuck out of it way more than the original. Better special effects, better acting, direction & soundtrack) .

'The Matrix Reloaded' was never widely panned, but it seems to me that its reputation has declined progressively in the years since its release. Nevertheless, I find it superior to the original, expanding the Matrix-verse into a more complex system with various conflicting programs, and setting up wider possibilities for the reality of the Matrix, while providing some incredible action sequences.
