Inherent Vice is based on a novel though, so I don't think it wants to be The Long Goodbye. I think Inherent Vice is vastly more interesting and more entertaining, so even if it does WANT to be The Long Goodbye it doesn't really matter to me. Inherent Vice is like being in a drug fueled haze and that is why I find it so effective, but PTA assures us that "it does make sense." Even if it doesn't make sense it doesn't really matter (I actually prefer that it doesn't) because the movie is more about mood and capturing a feel of fear/paranoia than plot.
I guess you could say that Inherent Vice is just more to my taste than The Long Goodbye.

McCabe and Mrs Miller and Theives Like Us. I haven’t seen many others but M&MM is absolutely wonderful and TLU is charming and haunting. And Bert Remsen and his niece was hilarious 😂
