They are top of the pile in the Women's game.
So, the question is 'Why are the women great, and yet the men's team is so shite?'

Not that popular here. Any talented athlete, by the time he gets to high school will be steered away from soccer and toward American Football, baseball or basketball. Even you make it to the top in soccer, you will have to go abroad to compete. MLS will never compare to the NBA or NFL for money and fame. And, for Father Jack, no pot of gold for the ladies in professional sports here,, unless its the WNBA. Soccer is the one sports a woman can be at the top.
That being said, it's shameful that the USMNT isn't in the WC. My grandmother's bridge club could get a bid from CONCECAF. Those bumbling jackoffs shouldn't have been allowed back into the country.

We're getting an MLS team in Austin and the only people here who care either don't want it, or want it for financial reasons. Haven't heard from any soccer fans.

It sounds cocky, but if the US cared even a little bit about soccer, they would have the best team in the world. They do not, so we do not.

Big country, popular global sport......they should be better. You phrase this as if it should be insulting, but we don’t care. Soccer to us is an after school activity to keep our 12 year old children busy. It has the same level of cultural value as a babysitter. As the poster above said, if we cared, we’d own it. But the vast majority of us recognize it for the silliness that it is.

We'll never be the best. 1980 was a fluke. Hockey is barely the fourth most popular sport here. Once again, if soccer or the NHL were anywhere near the level of the NFL and NBA here, then we would dominate.

So the "even a little bit" description was sarcasm? No. The NHL at least has some die-hard fans here in the US and still competes on a global scale, unlike soccer, which is about a popular as darts or pool in the US.

Soccer is the 2nd most popular sport among 18-34 year olds - it's far more popular than baseball in that age group. news.gallup.com/poll/224864/football-americans-favorite-sport-watch.aspxDarts!? If they want to play basketball then that be it. However, it is a long stretch to believe that you will own it if you cared about it. That's not how success in sport works.

Dumbarse! You must have never been here to make these statements. Soccer is never mentioned on any sport's programming in this country unless it is the World Cup. Even then it is back page news. Also, people cannot really make big money playing the sport here. The NBA and NFL are kings and our kids grow up playing football and basketball.

However, it is a long stretch to believe that you will own it if you cared about it. That's not how success in sport works. I am absolutely not a typical American Patriot. I just recognize that when we wish to be the best at something we typically are. You are right that Americans are on average better than people of other nations in many disciplines. For example, they excel in Olympics. However, there is a definite correlation between money invested in training for Olympics and returns that you get. The same cannot be said about a sport such as soccer. If that were the case, poorer countries like Brazil and Argentina will not be excelling in soccer compared to England, France or other richer nations where football is a sort of religion. It all comes down to skills, coaching and passion. I do not see how America will have more of these things than all the other countries of this world. That would require us to believe that people of America are inherently superior to people of other countries. Which they are not. Nor are they any less than people of other countries. While America might be a good team if it cared about soccer, to believe that it would own the sport (that is totally dominate) is being a bit chauvinistic and unrealistic.
