What the heck is this guy posting about that flop on the CFB for, you're probably asking yourself? Well, it is a flawed film, and yet, I like it. It's obviously inspired by those other 80's adventure/romance movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, Romancing the Stone, High Road to China and all the rest. Madonna and Sean Penn really wanted to work together and it's nice that they now have this little time capsule of that brief time when they were happily married. The plot is something about missionary Madonna hiring Penn to help her track down some opium because he speaks Chinese. Penn looks like he's either way too tanned or just heavily made up in the first half of the movie, and sporting what could only be called a mullet. Madonna, of course, looks great, as if she would allow herself to look badly in a movie. The whole movie is set in 1930-something Shanghai, China, and it looks great. There's a fun rickshaw race at the beginning! It has Victor Wong, Richard Griffiths, Clyde Kusatsu and even Paul Freeman from Raiders of the Lost Ark in the supporting cast! It all gets a little slow and dull in the middle, but overall, it's not a mess or a really bad film, as you've probably heard. George Harrison does the songs for the movie and does a cameo appearance, he's also the executive producer and the owner of Handmade Films, which produced this movie. The theme song, "Shanghai Surprise" is catchy, and you forget that you're listening to a modern day pop song in a movie set in 1930's China. Give it a chance if you're looking for some harmless fun. Penn doing comedy again is a nice change of pace, Madge looks great and acts totally against character as a stuffy missionary. I got all nostalgic for these kinds of movies from the 80's again after my recent rewatching.

This is one of those early Madonna movies I haven't seen in the longest time. Think I'll look out for a cheap copy, thanks for the prompt/.

Film critics really had it in for her. Not sure why as she's really good in some roles and a natural performer.

I think she got tired of the critics and switched to directing instead. She's always been keen to work with top directors from the American indie scene - Susan Seidelman, Allison Anders, Abel Ferrara, Spike Lee, Wayne Wang. This goes back to roots on the American underground.

lebowskidoo, do you like HUDSON HAWK? Yes, I loved it, saw it on opening night. Some movies you just love, even though the world does not and you even realize they may be right on some level.

"inspired by" or in other words "ripoff of" It's based on the novel Faraday's Flowers, published in 1978. We were both wrong, it would seem.
