The four exclamation points made it OFFICIAL. Any whiners who want to argue against the list, well, you should have spoke up before the list was OFFICIAL. You had over four and a half billion years to do that.
Being the number one Western critic of this board, it's up to me to make it OFFICIAL of course. Anyone got a problem with that? Meet me at the OK Corral.
The list is the best of each sort, the two best outright comedies, a few of the light hearted ones, a few of the super fun ones, meaningful ones, some on the list due to the lift by certain thespians (such as Walter Mattheau), some by striking directorial decisions (the gunfight in Tin Star, the little girl laughing at the dead man in Left Handed Gun), just doing the best. Honorable mentions later.
What makes the Western a Western? Hard to say. Some may not think Hud or Rainmaker are Westerns, but they are. They're stage plays first, but any good film has to work also as a stage play.
Some Civil War movies were hard to diagnose as complete Westerns, and a few I put in honorable mentions.
Then there's SAVAGE PAMPAS, an amazing film with a Western feel, but South America is so far East, I just couldn't include it.
One will also see a few MINISERIES on the list. Taking the best of those as well. As usual, the criteria were mostly for "credible characters in incredible circumstances", writing, entertainment, comic relief timing, directing, stunning scenery, and the usual criteria for grading films.
Finally, what comes first? Historical accuracy or character accuracy? Well, one can see by my OK Corral pick that I took character accuracy, since Clementine has about everything incorrect on the OK Corral.
Before the list, some honorable mentions: True Grit 2010, Reap the Wild Wind, Dark Command, 3:10 to Yuma 1957, The Raid, The Culpepper Cattle Company, A Lawless Street, Riding Shotgun, Viginia City, Last of the Mohicans, Belle Starr, The Hangman, The Hanging Tree, Saddle the Wind, The Texican, Gunfight at Comanche Creek, Six Black Horses, Seven Ways From Sundown, The Guns of Fort Petticoat, Ride Clear of Diablo, Column South, The Red Badge of Courage, Garden of Evil, Along Came Jones, Gunfight at the OK Corral, Along the Great Divide, Winchester 73 both versions, The Last Frontier, The Command, Cripple Creek, Young Guns, Pale Rider, The Tall Men, The Fastest Gun Alive, The Violent Men, The Redhead From Wyoming, River of No Return, Montana, Virginia City, and Tennessee Johnson.
Starting from number 100, going up to number one, the definitive Western film.
