I haven't seen all his films and I really do need to see Big Fish, Corpse Bride and Dark Shadows. Not so sure about Big Eyes. The ones I have chosen, are in no order, just year of release. They all involve a sense of style and even humor that really clicks with me and Burton is a very visual director. Big Fish is so great.

He's only got one movie I like, and very mildly at that... 1.Batman Returns (1992) - 5.5-6/10 (barely a Thumbs Up) (NOTE: my most recent re-watch of this was June 1st 2013 ; damn, already 5+ years since I last seen it. time flies.) basically I think his general style is a bit weird. it's just not something that sticks with you as it pretty much lost it's appeal as I got older. but maybe he's one of those directors people either lie or don't for the most part.I am not sure what you mean by your last statement. Burton has a tremendous sense of visual style and while it may be surreal, strange or weird, when he gets it right, he is sublime.
For my choices, which are in no order, expect for release date, I feel they are also ones where the style and the substance perfectly compliment each other:
Batman Returns - the fairy tale winter, turned dark and metropolis.
Ed Wood - a homage to cheaply produced old b&w crappy films from the 50's that had much warmth to it and was true to boot.
Mars Attacks - incorporated a parody of Hollywood sci-fi films from the 50's in a contemporary setting, which also wryly mocked and took kindly jabs at our own society.
Sweeny Todd - in which the *design was grim sparse and cold in many scenes, yet also breathed an uncanny authenticity and simple complexity in the detail, that made me feel what it must have really been like to have been living in Victorian London.
Frankenweenie - in beautiful b&w, gave us a terrific blend of stop motion animation and a fondness and nostalgia for the creature feature films of an era long gone.
* Deserved Academy Award® for it's production design.

Toasted CheeseIt was a typo... that 'lie' word was supposed to be 'like'. that should clear my statement up for you. p.s. I edited my previous post to correct that. Yeah, that's kind of why I think he's one of those directors people like quite a bit or not all that much. I think his general style is a bit weird which is not a good thing in my book especially as I got older (it worked better when I was much younger). but some people like that weirdness which might separate him from the pack for some people.

Cheers!
His weirdness is just part of his package, but he has always been original and inventive. He has his own trademark and I like different and that is what I think many of his films incorporate in his themes.
