Jor-El. I was going to say that, also Jonathan Kent (Glenn Ford)
Those Smallville scenes really stand out. No superhero movie since came close to capturing such emotional power as that.
"When you first came to us, we thought people would come and take you away because, when they found out, you know, the things you could do... and that worried us a lot. But then a man gets older, and he starts thinking differently and things get very clear. And one thing I do know, son, and that is you are here for a *reason*."

I absolutely agree. I know some people pick on the effects in Superman (1978) nowadays, but to me none of those distract from the fact that the movie has real 'heart' to it. Jonathan Kent's final scene in the movie does indeed still pack an emotional punch - it's just the 'simplicity' of it. He's spending time with Clark, starts to run/jog, then feels a pain in his arm and realises what's happening. Young Clark's reaction (along with Martha's) really says it all. And the long shot of them running over to Jonathan is especially powerful, I think. We may not have gotten to spend a real long time with either of Clark's father's in the movie, but both of them left a major impact. Superman (1978) remains a classic and no Superman film since has come close to beating it, in my opinion.

Melvin Douglas HUD Homer Bannon: You're an unprincipled man Hud. Hud Bannon: Don't let that worry you none. You got enough for both of us. I NEVER SANG FOR MY FATHERSaid by his wife :"Look how he walks. Like a brigadier general. He may not always remember where he is going, but he always goes there with a firm step." ... Said by his son, Gene Garrison: "I hate him. And I hate to hate him. "

In terms of fatherhood, I prefer Peter O'Toole's Henry II in LION IN WINTER, where he has some regard for his kids, than his BECKET, who had zilch.
Anyway... Charles Chaplin THE KID (1921) Alfred Abel METROPOLIS (1927) Joss Ackland THE THREE MUSKETEERS (1974) Sean Connery INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE (1989) Goofy A GOOFY MOVIE (1995)
